Gary Phillips Part of a Very Tough Top Doorslammer Field
March 8, 2006
After making the long trip to the other side of the country to Perth, Western Australia, Gary Phillips and his Lucas Oil 1953 Studebaker Top Doorslammer contested Round 5 of the Australian championship. After 3 intense qualifying sessions in trying 100 + degree conditions, Gary was in the number 7 spot with a 6.190 at 230mph.a time of 6.092 was the top qualifier. Some of the countries fastest cars did not make the tough cut. With the same hot weather on race day, the team was well aware of a must-win but cautious situation going into the first round given the points implications for a few competitors just from the outcome of this one race. Gary stormed his way to the win with a 6.238 at 230.17 victory over the current points leader John Zappia who shut off with problems, this e.t. gave Gary lane choice in the next round. In the semi-finals Gary was again up against a tough customer, and although he tried his best he just pulled up short. Gary’s consistent 6.210 at 229.59 was defeated by the 6.176 of Robin Judd with a margin of just .027 of a second, close but not quite enough. The Lucas Oil Products team is preparing for Round 6 of 7 of the Championship. The team is currently in fourth place and with a 98-point margin to the new points leader Steve Stanic. The fight for points is about to be taken to a new level as the next event is at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland on April 8 and we would expect weather conditions to be way more favourable to these 2700 lb. 3000h.p. sedans.
